There’s usually some kind of story behind a story and people seem to be curious about those “behind the scenes” moments that give life to these things.
I wrote the first draft of Lure a long, long time ago. It was the mid-90’s and I was still going to University. I also happened to work in a book store. As with most universities, parking was limited and expensive, so those of us who didn’t want to pay a lot would park somewhere ridiculous and ride a shuttle bus to the campus.
On a cold, late autumn day I sat in my car waiting for the bus. A woman walked past in a short, dark skirt, dark leggings, tall boots. She also had long, black hair. I’ll admit it, she caught my attention, though I never saw her face. I watched her for a moment before getting out of the car and walking to the bus stop. As I stood, the bus on its long approach, I noticed a leaf blowing across the parking lot. It flipped, rocking with its points curled up.
Lure was born in an instant. The basic story started dropping, picking pieces of recent memory as it fell.
It sat a long time between rewrites, a year here, two years there. Pieces were cut, moved, parts changed. Now you have it in what I hope is its final form.
If you haven’t read it yet, get your copy now. It’s a mere $0.99 on Amazon.
